Some historic background: Louis Philippe I (6 October 1773 – 26 August 1850) was proclaimed King of French in 1830 after his cousin Charles X was forced to abdicate in the events of the July Revolution of 1830. His government, known as the July Monarchy, was dominated by members of a wealthy French elite and numerous former Napoleonic officials. He was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848 and died in exile in Great Britain. Louis-Mathieu, Count Molé (24 January 1781 – 23 November 1855) was a notable French statesman who held numerous offices under Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, and Louis-Philippe. After the July Revolution of 1830, Molé served Louis-Philippe as the minister of foreign affairs and as the Prime Minister of France (6 September 1836 – 31 March 1839). After resigning his position as Prime Minister in 1839, he continued to serve in the Chamber of Deputies. After the coup d’etat of Dec. 2, 1851, he retired from public life and died in his chateau Champlâtreux on Nov. 23, 1855. In the summer of 1838 the leaders of the opposition redoubled their efforts against the cabinet of Molé. They joined forces in the polemic press campaign, attacking the government and demanding it's resignation. Louis-Philippe, who considered Molé as a personal friend, encouraged him to stand firm, constantly comforting and supporting him. In August 1838 the King showed his support with the honor of coming to Molé's home at the Chateau de Champlatreux and presiding over the meeting of the council of ministers. The scene was immortalized by the picture painted by Hanry Scheffer (1798-1862) and presented by the King to his Prime Minister. Today this picture can be seen in the Palace of Versailles. The bronze medal offered here was also struck to commemorate this event. Château de Champlâtreux. (Architect: Jean-Michel Chevotet).
