Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351-1767). Sacred Temple Relic. Overview:x We are pleased to offer this exceptionally rare copper alloy image of a Meditating Crowned Buddha, excavated from a Stupa at a temple precinct in the Ayutthaya province of north central Thailand. The figure was created during the late Ayutthaya Period, and at which time was stored in a stupa structure by Buddhist Monks, placed in large clay Vats along with other similar figurines of different sizes. The piece was primarily cast from a special process of 'smelting' metal, in accordance with the Buddhist Scripture of mixing 'magic' metals, obtained from the smelting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments. The piece is extremely well modeled in Royal Attire, and elevated on an elaborate pedestal, measuring 5.5 inches in height. Description:x Cast in bronze the image is depicted meditating in the seated position or 'Virasana' pose with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands overlap one another displaying the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection, and the concentration on good law, gesture. The symmetrically arranged figure is modeled with a somewhat flattened profile, dressed in royal attire with the robe covering both shoulders. The diaphanous garment itself is simplistic in design, with its smooth flowing lines, and the head is complemented by an elaborate headdress of similar motif. xxxx The face is portrayed with a refine remote appearance with almond-shaped eyes lowered in meditation, arched eyebrows join in the middle above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes rest short of the shoulders. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha', terminate to a pointed radiance finial. The crown itself is intricately ornamented, and framed by flanges at both sides of the head. The surface has a naturally aged reddish-brown oxidized patina, with remnants of gilt gold, and is partially covered with a verdigris patina throughout, from the environment in which it was maintained.
