Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful "Nakara" Wave Crest Art Glass match holder by the C. F. Monroe Co., signed c. 1900. Measures 1/2" high and 2 1/2" in diameter. Wave Crest glass was produced as an opal glass blank and was then hand decorated. There were three types of decoration used on this opal glass - Wave Crest, Kelva and Nakara each featuring their own distinct style of decoration. Both "Kelva" and "Nakara" decorated items were made in less quantity than basic "Wave Crest" items and are for that reason are generally more expensive and harder to find. This glass was at the height of its popularity from 1890 to 1910. Much of the opal glass known as Wave Crest was produced by the Mt. Washington Glass Co. and was purchased by the C. F. Monroe Co. as undecorated glass blanks to be decorated by their artists. This hard-to-find "Nakara" match holder features a soft pale pink/peach coloration with a hand enameled design with white jewels on light green circle and cream colored scallops. The top is fitted with a decorative brass band with side handles. The condition of this lovely piece is excellent with no chips, cracks or repairs. The background color is not faded nor is the paint worn. The base is marked "Nakara, C.F.M. Co.". Pictured on page 133 of the book "Wave Crest: The Glass of C.F. Monroe" by Wilfred R. Cohen.
