Description: 19th century Chinese tapestry / Altar cloth / banner with a vibrant red background. Designed for hanging with wide black loops along the top edge. Hand embroidered with intricate detail. Tapestry features five Chinese immortals, flowering trees, a bat in flight, and floral elements. The intricate design includes embroidered floral motifs and cloud-like forms sewn in with gold metallic thread.Three of the five figures are on foot. Two are mounted on mythological beasts. Along the bottom edge is a fine webbing with suspended coins / disks and a row of multi-color tassels died green gold and red. From left to right - Left figure carries what looks like a musical instrument, and rides a male Kilin / Kirin mythological beast with a dragon like head and two horns. Second figure has a large, domed head and carries a staff and a peach or persimmon. Third figure holds a fan and is accompanied by a child. Fourth figure holds a scroll in one hand and points with the other as though lecturing. Fifth figure is holding a fan, and mounted on a light colored Kilin with a horse like head, bushy tail and single horn like a unicorn. All figures are dressed in ornate robes and black hats with long tassels, except the figure with the staff. The left beast is more dragon like, multicolored with a large mane. The right beast has a deer or horse like head, no mane, and a branching tail. Each of these immortals brings a unique aspect to the tapestry, contributing to its cultural richness and symbolizing various virtues and aspects of Chinese mythology and folklore. Symbolism depicted includes longevity, knowledge, prosperity, happiness, power, wealth, compassion and more. This tapestry stands as a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the Qing period. Overall a superb example of Chinese history, mythology, and artistic tradition.
