Description: Protea magnifica Queen Protea PLEASE NOTE - PROTEAS AND THEIR RELATIVES ARE DIFFICULT PLANTS TO GROW AND MAINTAIN. THE YOUNG PLANTS I AM SELLING ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION AND HEALTH AT THE TIME OF SHIPPING. I ONLY GUARANTEE SAFE ARRIVAL - BUT OFFER NO GUARANTEE FOR THEIR SURVIVAL. Perhaps the most spectacular among Proteas, this beauty is aptly named the "Queen Protea" or "Magnificent Protea". Occurring in the south-western Cape of South Africa, this shrub naturally sprawls among rocks and rugged ledges from 1,200 to 2,700 meters, where they are subjected to moist fog or snow in winter, and hot and dry in summer - but covered with cool moist fog throughout the year. The compact shrubs have thick, strap-like leaves which are hairy when young, and glabrous later in life. The flower-heads are second largest (next to P. cynaroides) of the species, with bracts of cream, pink or red that are heavily bearded with white to dark brown hair, and the inner white perianths are tipped with black. A jewel among garden shrubs. Hardy in zones 9 to 10, Protea magnifica requires full sun and free-draining soil. Will tolerate wind and coastal conditions quite well. Deer resistant. Not suitable for growing in pots. Requires excellent air movement - will even tolerate coastal wind. The genus name honors the Greek Sea God, Proteus, who had the power to assume a great diversity of shapes - a reference to the diversity within this wonderful genus. This offer is for one, small, one year old seedling, in a 2" x 7" tube pot. Ready for transplanting into a gallon pot (for a season), or directly into the garden (preferred). The new year's growth is starting to show, or is already underway. The Seedlings shipped will vary in size , but are mostly 3-6+" tall. Protea magnifica is at the smaller end, and are about 3" tall +/-. Detailed growing instructions are included. As the plants are grown unprotected outdoors, some of the leaves may show a few blemishes or nibbles, and the leaves may take on some maroon tints in the winter and early spring - Protea magnifica has new foliage that is highlighted with pink and maroon (as may be seen in the photos), and the coloration is lost as the leaves age and mature. Protea magnifica is a slow one to start, and there is an old adage that is suitable for this species: The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap. All photos are of plants among my collection, unless stated otherwise. The second to last photo shows a batch of various seedlings and variation in heights of what are shipped, which is dependent on species. The last photo is a shot of the actual batch of plants that will be shipped. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING - SORRY - I ONLY SHIP TO THE US.
