Description: Royalty History at Argyll Etkin Ltd PRINCESS ALICE COUNTESS ATHLONE LETTER TO SIR THEODORE MARTIN 1908 Fine ALS from Princess Alice, later Countess of Athlone (1883-1981), to Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) Biographer of Prince Albert. Princess Alice was the last surviving grand daughter of Queen Victoria and the longest living Princess Blood Royal, her father was the son of Queen Victoria, Prince Leopold Duke of Albany who was a hemophiliac and died young, her mother was Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont. She married Prince Alexander of Teck, the brother of the future Mary, Queen Consort of King George V. Princess Alice like other members of the royal family were forced to renounce their German titles hence she became Albany instead of Princess Alice of Teck. She was on friendly terms with Queen Victoria and after reading Sir Theodore Martin's account of Prince Albert: 'Life of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort', became on friendly terms with him. His pseudonym was Bon Gaultier: "4 Devonshire Place, W 31.V.1908. My dear Sir Theodore, It is too nice of you to think of sending me your Bon Gaultier Ballads and with your own preface too written so very many years after the poems were brought out. Thank you very much indeed, I shall always value the little book as a present from you apart from having known some of its contents since I was a small child and from having delighted in them then as now. Believe me yours very sincerely Alice" AE077_014AE077_014 Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
