Epidote is a stone that increases whatever it touches. Prehnite was first found and labeled in the year 1788 in the Karoo dolerites of Cradock, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It was named for Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn, commander of the military forces of the Dutch colony at the Cape of Good Hope from 1768 to 1780. It is known that Von Prehn was a mineral collector, and that it was he who brought the first recognized specimen of prehnite to Europe. No one seems to know how Von Prehn stumbled upon the mineral in the first place. While prehnite may have been in use before the 18th century, there is no solid documentation on that use. Prehnite typically occurs in green, but you can also find specimens which are blue, colorless, pink, or white. Orange prehnite has also been found, as evidenced by the discovery of a rare specimen in the Kalahari Manganese Fields in South Africa in 2000. Epidote was first described in 1801 by R.J. Hauy and was named after the Greek word meaning to “increase”. The name Epidote is from the Greek prefix 'epi' meaning 'over' and 'didonai' meaning 'to give' which refers to its appearance in some cases where one side of the crystal is enlarged over the other. Because of its similarity to tourmaline, epidote was not recognized as its own mineral until the 1800s. Throughout history, epidote has primarily been of use as a magical and metaphysical tool.
