Description: Old, ca. 1950’s ‘German Expressionist School’ woodcut / woodblock print by Bohemian / Central European (Prague) female artist Dolly Perutz (Czech, 1908-79). She arrived in New York in 1938 and this Expressionist woodcut was done here in the USA.This is a limited edition woodcut. Only 10 were made. This is the only example I could locate. It’s a portrait of Boris Pasternak, Russian author famous for ‘Doctor Zhivago’. I’d think this print was made around 1958. It’s laid down (glued to) a newer and thin paperboard backer, per two creases and I guess to get it more presentable looking.Adolphine (Dolly) Hellmann Perutz studied under Austrian-born modern artist Bernard Reder (1897-1963). She was a gorgeous woman, from a wealthy Jewish family. Her work is held in major museum collections such as that of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Exhibitions of her work were held at the Gallerie du Dragon, Paris, France (1953); Wittenbron Gallery, New York (1957); Gallerie Kunsterbund, Salzburg, Austria (1960); Gallerie Gurlitl, Munich, Germany (1962); Bader Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1970); and the Brentano Gallery, Manhasset, New York (1977).Dolly Perutz became an Atelier 17 artist. Perutz’s name appears in the Grippe student ledger book for March 1952 and April-May 1953, though it is possible she was affiliated with Atelier 17 earlier. See the Christina Weyl Atelier 17 site for details including…“Although few of her works on paper are dated, it seems she started in the Germanic tradition of woodcut—a medium that Reder was also exploring in the 1940s—and eventually moved onto intaglio and lithography, the latter of which engaged her through the 1950s and 1960s”.As noted in an article by Victoria Chick, “Dolly Perutz was influenced by the Expressionist artists working in a number of Eastern European countries between WWI and WWII”.Perutz was also a sculptor. Her 1973 bronze, “Bird Flying Machine” is in Central Park, New York City. “This distinctive bronze sculpture by Dolly Perutz (1908-1979) is situated on the roof of The Arsenal, the site of Parks headquarters and former home of the Museum of Natural History. Cast at Modern Art Foundry in Astoria, Queens, the work consists of a modeled bird’s head and feet connected by stylized plumage made from welded bronze plates”.See Alice Bellony-Rewald, “Dolly Perutz: The Last 25 Years of Her Work (New York: Bodley Gallery, 1981)” for more information about the artist. The Bodley Gallery was famous and had shows by other artists including Andy Warhol, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Roberto Matta, Larry Rivers, etc. CHECK MY FEEDBACK AND BUY WITH CONFIDENCE! *** 20+ years of happy customers on eBay *** Please see my other eBay listings for more great items.Message me to arrange for combined shipping on multiple purchases.
