FAST and SAFE DELIVERY. Note that for the 1962 re-release of this classic Hitchcock movie (released to capitalize on the success of Psycho), Paramount added a large image of Hitchcock to the top of the posters, and added a box at the bottom that calls Raymond Burr "TV's Perry Mason" (between Rear Window's first release and 1962, Burr went from being a minor character actor to a major TV star!). Also note that Grace Kelly was given an added credit that says "The Princess - in her most striking performance!" Note that the new tagline for the movie was "See it! - If your nerves can stand it after PSYCHO!" 1954. Directed by ALFRED HITCHCOCK. TAGLINE: "Through his rear window and the eye of his powerful camera he watched a great city tell on itself, expose its cheating ways...and Murder!" "See It! - If your nerves can stand it after PSYCHO!" - A photographer in a wheelchair spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window, and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend. Professional photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies breaks his leg while getting an action shot at an auto race. Confined to his New York apartment, he spends his time looking out of the rear window observing the neighbors. He begins to suspect that a man across the courtyard may have murdered his wife. Jeff enlists the help of his high society fashion-consultant girlfriend Lisa Fremont and his visiting nurse Stella to investigate. FOUR Academy Award OSCAR Nominations including Best Director, Best Writing Screenplay, Best Cinematography. CAST includes James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Raymond Burr, Thelma Ritter, Judith Evelyn, Georgine Darcy, Frank Cady, Ross Bagdasarian, Sara Berner, Jesslyn Fax, Irene Winston, Marla English, Kathryn Grant, Gig Young (voice), Alfred Hitchcock. BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : This movie was shot on a specially constructed set that took fifty men two months to build, and cost somewhere between $75,000 and $100,000. That would be equivalent of from $840,000 to $1,120,000 in 2022. The entire movie was shot on one set, which required months of planning and construction. The apartment-courtyard set measured ninety-eight feet wide, one hundred eighty-five feet long, and forty feet high, and consisted of thirty-one apartments, eight of which were completely furnished. The courtyard was set twenty to thirty feet below stage level, and some of the buildings were the equivalent of five or six stories high. In order to get the scale right, the soundstage floor had to be removed so the courtyard could be built in a former storage space in the basement. Therefore, Jeff's apartment, which appears to be on the second floor, was actually at street level. The set included thirty-one apartments, of which twelve were fully furnished. The whole thing became a marvel that visitors to the studio were eager to see, and it was featured in magazine spreads while shooting was still in progress. During the month-long shoot, Georgine Darcy (Miss Torso), "lived" in her apartment all day, relaxing between takes as if really at home. One thousand arc lights were used to simulate sunlight. Thanks to extensive pre-lighting of the set, the crew could make the changeover from day to night in under forty-five minutes. All the apartments in Thorwald's building had electricity and running water, and could be lived in. Despite big box-office success and four Oscar nominations, the film failed to score a best picture Oscar nomination, any acting nominations, or (most surprisingly) a nomination for the fantastic set design.
