Description: Poe the Detective, Curious Circumstances Behind the Mystery of Marie Roget. This is a scarce book. Condition: Good. Solid book and jacket with some wear and light foxing. No writing. All pages present and well attached. The mystery of Marie Rocher, one of the three stories in which Edgar Allan Poe founded modern detective fiction, was based upon a real murder. Over a period of years, the author thoroughly researched the circumstances of the real case, the death in 1841 of Mari Cecelia Rogers, “the beautiful cigar girl. “ Walsh read all the newspaper reports. He familiarized himself with the area in New York City where she lived and where she worked as a counter girl at John Anderson’s tobacco store. The sanity of Weehawken New Jersey near which her body was found, is today much changed from what it was in 1841. Walsh examined topographical maps from the period. Author shows how Por constructed his story from the facts of the Rogers case, moved it to a Parisian setting, and made it a foil for the talent of his fictional detective C. Auguste Dupin. Poe found it necessary to make important changes in the story not only after its initial publication but while it was running as a serial in Snowden’s “Ladies Companion.” Inventory shelf six.
