LARGE PIECE OF DECORATIVELY CARVED MAHOGANY WOOD FROM A BEDSTEAD PERSONALLY GIFTED BY KING GEORGE III TO U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED KINGDOM JOHN QUINCY ADAMS Attached on the verso is an early to mid 19th century handwritten note of provenance: “Piece of solid mahogany bedstead that once belonged to John Quincy Adams, it being a present to him by the King of England while minister to his Court from this country. Presented by Mrs. H.B. Whitney.” A wonderful relic crafted by England’s most prominent furniture designer for the King of Great Britain and of Ireland to the future President of the United States. ATTACHED ON THE VERSO IS AN EARLY TO MID 19TH CENTURY HANDWRITTEN NOTE OF PROVENANCE, A WONDERFUL RELIC FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN AND OF IRELAND TO THE FUTURE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Adams negotiated the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812 between the United States and United Kingdom. Following the signing of the treaty, Adams traveled to Paris and witnessed Napoleon’s Hundred Days, during which time he was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom by President James Madison. Adams negotiated a limited trade agreement and the release of prisoners of war and stranded sailors with Britain. He likely had several audiences with George III during his tenure from 1815 to 1817 before he was appointed as President James Monroe’s Secretary of State.
