Description: EXTRA INFOPHOTO ALDGATE UNDERGROUND STATION THE STAIRS FROM THE MEZZANINE LANDING TO THE FORMER STATION MASTER'S OFFICE. (METROPOLITAN AND CIRCLE LINES) 6 APRIL 2023. THE STATION WAS OPENED IN NOVEMBER 1876 AS THE EASTERN TERMINUS OF AN EXTENSION OF THE METROPOLITAN RAILWAYS 1863-65 BUILT PADDINGTON (BISHOPS ROAD) - FARRINGDON â MOORGATE LINE THE FIRST UNDERGROUND RAILWAY IN THE WORLD. CONSTRUCTION OF ALDGATE TOOK A LONG TIME AS IT WAS ON THE SITE OF A PLAGUE PIT NEXT TO ST. BOTOLPHS ALDGATE CHURCH! OVER 1000 BODIES HAD TO BE EXHUMED. IN SEPTEMBER 1882 THE MR EXTENDED ITS LINE SOUTHWARDS TO TOWER OF LONDON AND IN OCTOBER 1884 THE METROPOLITAN INNER CIRCLE COMPLETION RAILWAY (MICCR) A JOINT LINE OF THE MR AND METROPOLITAN DISTRICT RAILWAY (MDR THOUGH BRANDED AS THE DR â DISTRICT RAILWAY) BETWEEN ALDGATE (MR) AND MANSION HOUSE (MDR) AND TOWER OF LONDON (AND HENCE ONTO ALDGATE) COMPLETED THE LONG PLANNED âˌINNER CIRCLE SERVICE THE RUNNING OF WHICH BOTH COMPANIES SHARED. THE INNER CIRCLE CONNECTED MOST OF LONDONS MAIN LINE TERMINI. INTERESTINGLY THE MRS TOWER OF LONDON STATION WAS SITED VERY CLOSE TO THE MICCRS MARK LANE STATION AND THE DR REFUSED TO SELL TICKETS TO IT! CONSEQUENTLY THE TOWER OF LONDON STATION CLOSED ONLY DAYS AFTER THE OPENING OF THE MICCR IN OCTOBER 1884; IRONICALLY MARK LANE WAS RENAMED TOWER HILL IN 1946 AND WAS ITSELF CLOSED IN 1967 TO BE REPLACED BY A NEW TOWER HILL ON THE SITE OF THE MRS TOWER OF LONDON STATION! THE ORIGINAL SURFACE STATION BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1926 AND REPLACED BY ONE DESIGNED BY CHARLES WALTER CLARK THE MRS CHIEF ARCHITECT 1921-33. IT IS IN NEO-CLASSICAL STYLE WITH A FA?§ADE IN WHITE FAIENCE. ALTHOUGH VERY ATTRACTIVE IN MY OPINION IT LOOKS CONSERVATIVE â EVEN OLD FASHIONED â COMPARED TO THE MODERNE-STYLE STATIONS CHARLES HOLDEN WAS BUILDING AT THE SAME TIME ON THE MORDEN EXTENSION OF THE CITY AND SOUTH LONDON RAILWAY (NOW THE CITY BRANCH OF THE NORTHERN LINE). THANKFULLY THE 1876 TRAINSHED ROOF WAS NOT DEMOLISHED AND STILL SURVIVES. PICTURED IS THE STAIRS FROM THE MEZZANINE LANDING TO THE FORMER STATION MASTER'S OFFICE.
