Description: Photograph Notes: Built towards the end of the eighteenth century, the water-powered New Abbey Corn Mill ceased commercial operation in the 1940s and has been carefully restored. Now in the care of Historic Scotland and inn full working order, it is operates regularly during the summer months to demonstrate to visitors how oatmeal was produced. The building has an unusual design for a mill of this type as it combined the working mill with a house for the miller. This was a very risky arrangement as the need to dry the grain in a kiln before milling it meant that there was an ever-present danger of fire. It was much more common for the millers house to be in a separate building: so that if the mill burned down (as mills often did) it didnt take the house with it (://undiscoveredscotland/newabbey/newabbeymill/indexl Undiscovered Scotland). Although the building standing here today is little more than 200 years old, it is on the site of a very much older mill, built by monks from Sweetheart Abbey five hundred or more years earlier and the building is still referred to locally as Monksmill.
