Description: A fine original hand signed lithograph by German Expressionist artist Max Mayrshofer (1875-1950). The lithograph is titled somewhat illegibly, the first syllable is clearly "Fleisch", so something to do with carnality or butchery, it can go either way with this artist. The image measures approx. 8 1/4 x 12 inches with wide margins, the sheet measures approx. 14 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches and is hand signed, titled and numbered by the artist in pencil in the lower margin. It is printed in black ink on cream colored laid paper, with an armorial watermark, aside from small vestiges of glue to the top reverse corners of the sheet, it is in excellent condition and ready for framing. Mayrshofer's work is included in the permanent collections of numerous German museums, in America, there are examples of Mayrshofer's work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Harvard Art Museums, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Max Mayrshofer (1875-1950) was born the son of a baker in Munich. His artistic education began there in 1890 at the school of applied arts. He was a member of the avant garde group, the Munich Secession, from 1906, Mayrshofer's drawings were exhibited in many important art exhibitions, including the Heinrich Thannhauser gallery in Munich, the Gurlitt gallery in Berlin, and in 1913 at the International Exhibition of Modern Art (The Armory Show) in New York. The art critic Georg Jakob Wolf writes about Mayrshofer's debut in the Modern Gallery in 1910: "So amazingly, it has mature originality that parallels with Liebermann, even Menzel, and wants to impose itself in exuberant ecstasy." From 1908 Mayrshofer taught at the Munich Academy and Anton Azbe's private school. He was soon accepted as a graphic artist for the artistic periodicals “Jugend”, “Simplicissimus” and “Hyperion”. In 1925 he was appointed professor at the Munich Academy. Mayrshofer lived all his life in Munich, where he died on December 9, 1950.
