CPM M4 is widely considered to be a top tier premium steel and a massive improvement over s35/45 primarily in toughness but also in edge retention and sharpenability. This allows the steel to take a keen edge without the same risk of microchipping that the s45/35 line is prone to. That said, yes you lose the stainless. I find the tradeoff well worth it, and a light coat of oil works wonders
