Description: Pearson's Magazine, bound in hardback, January to June 1897 published by C Arthur Pearson, London 1897. Dark blue embossed paper covered boards with very dark green leather spine and corners. The spine, which has faded and discoloured over time, has 5 raised bands, one compartment has dark red leather panel with gilt title. spine has gilt tooling. Some wrinkling and wear to exterior, including wear to the leather of the spine (please refer to scans) Internally, however, the book is very sound and in nice condition. Edges of text block are red speckled. The brown endpapers are in nice condition also. There is some little foxing to following prelims, but this is only slight. The book has the usual mixture of fascinating articles and stories, much illustrated, as we expect from Pearson. The main feature, of course, is that it contains the first ever appearance of chapters I to IX of H G Wells' War of the Worlds. This important and iconic work was illustrated in this magazine by Warwick Goble. These marvellous illustrations, which now seem as intrinsically as much a part of the story as Paget's illustrations of Sherlock Holmes stories, were not included when War Of The Worlds appeared in book form. Also included are pieces by Guy Booth, Conan Doyle, Max Pemberton, Bernard Capes, &c, &c. I have also listed other Pearson's Magazines, including chapters XIV to XXII of War of the Worlds. 620All the books which I list are from our own private collection, which is extensive. As you will see from my feedback, I am very keen that all buyers are happy with their purchases. I give as much information as possible about the condition of books, although the best impression can be gleaned from the photos, which are always scans, as I believe this gives the clearest image. Incidentally, the line down the centre of the image is a fault with my scanner, not the item. In descriptions I tend to err on the side of being critical, so items might sound worse than they are! This is to avoid anyone being disappointed.Being married to an avid collector, I realise how very important the condition of books is, and so I take care to pack all books securely to ensure that they arrive in the same state that they leave me. If you would like any further information about my listings or would like more images, please ask, and I will do my best to help. I send items in the UK by Royal Mail. Overseas buyers can opt for Ebay Global Shipping Programme. Please note that I do not set the costs of global shipping, and, in fact, I can't even see what these costs are. I regret that I do not send items abroad using other couriers. I post in the morning on Mondays and Thursdays. And, of course, I can combine postage. Please enquire
