Wild Life CommentaryAfter the Beatles broke up, McCartney formed a new band, Wings, with his wife, photographer Linda McCartney, and former Moody Blues member Denny Laine. This was their debut album. McCartney said of the album, which was recorded in just two weeks, "I read an article about Bob Dylan making an album in a short time, and I loved the idea. The Beatles' early albums didn't take long, and Dylan seemed to take his time as well. I had a lot of respect for Dylan, and I still do, so I thought if he was okay with it, I'd give it a go. Linda was pregnant with Stella during the recording. If she had wanted to stop the session, she would have, but she didn't. A lot of women work until two weeks before their due date, and Linda did the same." Five of the songs were recorded in one take, and the rough performances, as if they were rehearsal takes, were recorded as they were, which drew criticism from critics at the time. On the other hand, former partner John Lennon said of the album, "It's good. It's not bad. She's on a good track." In the UK, it only reached #11 on the album chart, just missing the top 10. In the US, it reached #10 on the Billboard album chart for two consecutive weeks, and #6 on the Cashbox album chart for two consecutive weeks, placing it #73 in the 1972 charts. It sold over 500,000 copies in the US. *Hoffman's adjustments depend on the quality of the tape source and the mixing engineer's equalization choices. He eschews noise reduction, instead adding subjective coloration with subtractive equalization and up to five layers of tube distortion.
