Hand numbered: S5270 Hand-written name “Sue” on bottom of cup**see story below. This Paragon Teacup & Saucer set is a rare find for collectors. Made in England during the 1940s, this bone china set is a reproduction of the old Lowestoft pattern. The colorful multicolor design includes pink roses, swags, urns, and orange trim and adds a touch of vintage charm to any tea time. The set includes a 5 oz teacup and a matching saucer. Here’s the story behind the name “Sue” on the bottom of the cup: This set belonged to my grandmother, Margaret Cope, whose parents emigrated to the US from England in the early 1900s. She had a collection of teacups and saucers that were displayed in places of honor throughout her home for specific reasons and were each very special to her. This one was given to her by her older sister, Mary, who had traveled to China and had an affinity for Asian style in English China. Plus, Mary was named after Queen Mary, who is named on the bottom of this set. My grandfather passed away when Nana was in her early 60s, leaving her a widow for the next 30 years. Over those decades, Nana moved from their moderately-sized retirement home in Florida to small apartment near her family in the northeast and eventually to an assisted living facility. This set was with her until the very end. She lived to be 93. At some point, she realized her own mortality and was afraid her family members would argue over who would inherit which of her beloved teacups. So, as each female family member visited her, she asked her to choose one of her teacup sets she especially liked and wrote her name on the bottom of the cup (in Sharpie…insert eye roll here.). So when Nana passed, my mom, “Sue” inherited this particular set who passed it along to me. As it turns out, I’ve grown my own collection, and don’t have room for this one anymore.
