Otto (Franz Otto) Arnz was born on August 29, 1823 in Dusseldorf, Germany, as a son of Heinrich Arnz - owner of Dusseldorf publishing house "Arnz & Comp." (see our second additional image). Otto Arnz became a lithographer as a young man, before he began attending Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. There, he trained with Wilhelm Schadow, Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Theodor Hildebrandt. His younger brother Albert Arnz (1832-1914; see our third additional image) also became a renowned landscape artist. Similarly, their brothers-in-law - Albert Flamm, Oswald Achenbach and Joseph Fay - were celebrated German artists. Like all of them, Arnz was a (founding) member of Dusseldorf Artist Union "Malkasten". In the early 1850, besides traveling through Germany and Austria (while in transit, he also visited Bohemia (now Czech Republic) and Hungary), Arnz sojourned in town Vollendam, Netherlands and took part in exhibitions in Den Haag and Amsterdam. In the same period (early 1850s), he was befriended with composer Robert Schumann (their correspondence from 1851 and 1853 had been preserved). In 1854, after the death of their father, his elder brother Carl Arnz and he took over the ownership of "Arnz & Comp.". Three years later, however, they were forced to escape from Germany because of impending insolvency resulting from counterfeiting. They fled to South America, and it is known that both of them have passed away in Buenos Aires sometime after 1860. Our image nr.3 offers the biography of Otto Arnz from Wikipedia.
