Description: Very nice and difficult to find Indian Wars officers private purchase campaign hat. The felt body on this one has a wonderful "worn in the field" look to it, featuring a mildly disheveled and crumpled appearance. Hats of this design were popular among officers, including a similar example worn by General Nelson A. Miles. This hat bears John Stetson's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania logo on the leather sweatband. This hat was likely produced in the 1880's as it bears traits of the US M1883/M1889 pattern campaign hats, with noticeable differences. Chief among them is the absence of side ventilation holes, as well as the absence of stitching on the brim. While the army was transitioning to drab colored campaign hats during this period, officers had the option of purchasing black/dark blue hats (see Langolier's "Hats Off". Nonetheless, a rare hat that is very seldom encountered. The hat remains in very good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. Typical fading and soiling from actual use, but overall fine. Leather sweatband is intact and fine. Please see the pictures for more detail. Guaranteed 100% authentic in every respect for life.
