Description: Original Civil War Period Black Silk Apron with three horizontal bands of black velvet trim; fully-lined with polished cotton and having a cartridge-pleated waistband. This apron is completely hand-sewn and dates to the Civil War period; the third quarter of the 19th century. This was probably worn as an accessory to the wardrobe of a woman or teen in mourning. It is more a special occasion apron, rather than one worn for domestic chores or cooking. It is in excellent condition and doesn't appear to have been worn much. The apron is 25" long and 25 1/2" across the width at the hem. The cartridge-pleated waist measures 11" across at the waistband with black ribbon ties.
