Description: for sale what I believe to be an original Duncan Phyfe tilt top mahogany breakfast table with a maple band around the periphery of the table top. it belonged to my aunt who I had to recently place in residential care. she is 104 still living alone but can barely hear and still tries to drive herself to various places. I have to drive 80 miles to check on her because she can't hear the phone and if she does she can't ascertain much of what I say. anyway, she claims her great grandfather moved from penn. to ill. in the early 1800's, he then moved to mo. is 1835 and we have been here ever since. at any rate, he brought this table with him and some other items. the table is 54 inches long, 41.5 inches wide, and 29 inches tall. the table is in great shape for its age, my grand dad put some thin supports on the underside of the table to stop a casement crack probably 100 years or so ago. it does not take away from the table at all. the top of the table is beautiful flame mahogany with about a 1.5 inch maple band around the edge of the top. I think the base or pedestal is walnut but may be mahogany. it attaches to the swivel part of the bottom of the table via mortise and tendon method. I replaced the screws with lag screws. it is as solid as a rock. the locking mechanism is perfect and if you place a 1/4 inch magazine on top of the swivel part of the table top and then latch it there is no wiggles, wobbles, or movement of any kind. the feet have the original brass covers over the toes and the casters are solid brass which are all original. there are a lot of so called Duncan Phyfe pieces but very few originals made by Phyfe and co. himself. I believe this to be one. you won't find an original piece on ebay. many pieces carry a Duncan Phyfe label but are pieces made by others is a similar style as the original pieces by Phyfe. he was out of business or dead by 1800. I googled Duncan Phyfe and the original pieces are priced from 50- 400,000.00. I am going to start this piece at what I think is a most fair price and a great opportunity for someone to get an original piece for pennies on the dollar. it may be picked up at my home or shipped at the buyer's expense. I have collected for over 60 years and I now need to dispose of hundreds of furniture pieces and thousands of small items such as porcelain, lamps, bronze etc. good luck.
