Description: Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is a well listed German born painter who is known for his abstract artworks and his teaching influence. He is often considered to be the iconic artist who paved the way for Abstract Expressionism to take hold in America. His earliest works were non-objective and were characterized by geometric expression, expressive colors and broad brushstrokes. He was equally known as a teacher whose school was one of the first to include modern art in the curriculum. He had a significant influence on many of America's most well-known abstract painters including Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Rivers, Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchell who were his students at the Hans Hofmann School of Art in N.Y. Hofmann's works are in most major art museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Tate Modern; the Germnisches National Museum; the National Gallery of Art; and the Art Institute of Chicago. The artwork for sale is an oil painting on canvasboard. It is signed and dated at the lower right "Hans Hofmann '63" (photo 2). The painting measures 12" high and 16" inches across. The primary colors are blues, oranges and yellows in thick, broad brushstrokes. There is no provenance for this painting so it is being sold as "attributed to Hans Hofmann". Style, signature and age of materials strongly indicate that this is an original Hofmann painting but "caveat emptor".
