Description: Original 1794 copperplate engraved antique map of the island of Grenada in the West Indies, printed more than 230 years ago. The map was engraved by John Cooke and published in London by John Stockdale for inclusion in The History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies, by Bryan Edwards. The image area measures 23.5 x 17.3 cm [9¼" x 6¾"]. Longitude is measured from London, and the distance scale is calibrated in Statute Miles. Topography is drawn in relief, and place names are in French, reflecting the island's prior status as a colony of France. It labels the island's capital as Fort Royal (today St. George) and shows the natural harbor, which provided refuge to the French Navy during hurricanes. It also locates the former town of Megrin on the island's southeast coast. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, uncolored, as issued, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Grenada had become a French colony early in the 17th century. It was captured by Britain during the Seven Years War and became a British colony under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. It was recaptured by France in 1779 and restored to Britain by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. We may also have an original 1758 French map of Grenada by Jacques Nicolas Bellin in our eBay store.
