Description: ARTIST: Unknown artist. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a lovely rendering of pedestrians strolling through the snow under a looming grey sky near the Stork fountain in central Copenhagen. Located in the famous pedestrian street, “Strøget”, the fountain was inaugurated in 1894, and at that time water would splash on the wings of the birds and hit passers-by, which made the press very critical about the fountain. The police then shut down the water supply, but later re-opened it. Since the 1950’s, it became a tradition for newly graduated midwives to dance around it. During the youth revolt in the 1960’s, it was a popular meeting spot for hippies, and as such it was immortalized in a song made by Danish folk singer “Cæsar”. There’s a year “1992” written on the back of the frame, but I think, it might indicate a previous sale of the painting, so based on the type of frame, the canvas and the scene, I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1930-1960. Signed: Monogram “HIH” or “HH” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 38 cm/15" * 32 cm/12.6". Without frame: 29 cm/11.4" * 23 cm/9.1". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
