Description: Ohio River Collector Mussel Shell Button Blank, Mother-of-Pearl Buttons & BlanksThis is a very old mussel shell that buttons have been cut from. I found it along the Ohio River where an old shell button factory once was. The factory produced buttons from the local shell materials of the Ohio River in the late 1800’s. This is a nice example with all holes still visible and round. The shell measures approximately 2 " x 1 7/8 " and has had 3 hole cut thru it. The holes are about 5/8" -1/2" diameter. The Mother-of-pearl on the inside has a nice shine. I am selling this unusual button blank shell with 10 genuine vintage shell buttons ( which are not cut from this particular shell !). The buttons are all old however. The mother-of-pearl shell buttons range in size from 1" to 1/2". In addition I have included a hard to find lot of rough blanks. These little piece are the first cut shaped made into the shell before the finishing process to create a button. They are often lost in the rocks of the river and ground down. These are survivors. They may or may not have been culls. Together the pair of mother of pearl buttons, the button shell blank and rough blanks make a nice little collection. I also included a bit of shell fragment with partial hole cuts that has a colorful sheen found on site for interest. It shows the life of a shell button from start…to finish.
