Description: Object Substitution Masking by Jason Reiss Object substitution masking (OSM) refers to afailure of a target to reach conscious awarenesswhen it is surrounded by dots that share a commononset but remain visible after the target isremoved. This effect may reflect reentrant(feedback) visual processes that result in the maskreplacing the target representation. This notion ofsubstitution is present in a variety of topicsregarding spatiotemporal object perception includingthe attentional blink (AB), change blindness, andinattentional blindness. Although a number ofstudies have explored the OSM phenomenon, few haveexamined the depth of processing associated with themasked targets.
