It was no branch line, but a secondary main line, double track for half its length. Local traffic was particularly heavy on Friday market days and during the summer months full length holiday express trains, including the famous "Atlantic Coast Express" ran from Waterloo to the North Devon resorts. The 39-mile long line has had a fascinating and at times unusual history. Both the Exeter & Crediton and North Devon railways were born during the period of 'Railway Mania' and had a turbulent early history. The tracks from Cowley Bridge Junction to Crediton were ready for traffic but lay rusting and unused for no less than four years, a vicitim of railway politics. The line was also involved in the 'Battle of the Gauges', won eventually by the London & South Western over the broad gauge interests of the Bristol & Exeter Railway. The author, John Nicholas, was born only a couple of miles from the Southern Railways' works at Eastleigh and has always had a particular interest in the former London & South Western Railway system. A detailed study of the lines in North Devon began in connection with a project to build a model railway but the amount of material emanating from these researches has resulted in two books to date, Lines to Torrington, published by OPC in 1984 and now The North Devon Line. This book - the first full-length work to be published on the subject -documents the full history of the line, from the earliest proposals through to the present day and includes details of the motive power used, freight and passenger services over the years together with a detailed description of the line, its stations and structures. It is therefore of great interest to local historians, railway enthusiasts and modellers. All pictures are of the actual item.
