Description: Nippon M-in-Wreath Set of 4 Dessert Plates Hand Painted Flowers w/Gold 1911-1918 NIPPON Exquisite Decorative Set of 4 DESSERT PLATES 6 1/2" Diameter, M-in-Wreath mark, Hand Painted PINK ROSES & BLUE FLOWERS w/GREEN LEAVES in Cartouches, GOLD Trim, from Moraimura Bros. in Noritake, Japan, circa 1911-1918 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted set was produced using a pink, blue, green & grey with gold on white & light cream color palette. The gold trims the rim and forms the 6 cartouches surrounding the rim. This has alternating white and light cream backgrounds in the cartouches. The white background has the realistic sprays of flowers and the light cream background has enameled stylistic pink flowers with green leaves. This is most intricate. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find it remarkable that the gold shows no appropriate wear. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a height of 3/4" and a diameter is 6 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this set is the blue M-in-Wreath Mark. The M-in-Wreath Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the M-in-Wreath’s red mark #47 to since 1911. This seems to narrow the window of use for the M-in-Wreath mark to 1911-1918.
