NGC VF Antoninianus of Otacilia Severa AD244-249 NGC Ancients Double Denarius

Description: NGC VF Antoninianus of Otacilia Severa AD244-249 NGC Ancients Double Denarius Marcia Otacilia Severa, the Empress of Rome and wife of Emperor Philip the Arab (244-249), married Philip in 234, possibly during his service in the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Alexander Severus. They had at least one child, Marcus Iulius Philippus Severus or Philippus II (born in 238), who later became co-emperor with his father. When Emperor Gordianus died in Mesopotamia in February 244, suspected of murder, Severa may have been involved in the conspiracy. Philip ascended as the new emperor, giving his predecessor a proper funeral. He honored Severa with the title of Augusta and named their son heir to the purple.Severa and Philip, sometimes considered the first Christian imperial couple, showed tolerance towards Christianity as persecutions ceased during their reign. Severa's intervention saved Bishop and Saint Babylas of Antioch from persecution. In 249, the Danubian armies proclaimed Decius Augustus, and Philip died in battle near Verona. Decius became the sole emperor. Severa, in Rome at the time, learned of her husband's death, and their son was murdered by the Praetorian Guard in her arms. Severa outlived her husband and son, living in obscurity thereafter.
