Description: NGC Judean AE Prutah Jewish Revolt of AD66-70 First Jewish-Roman WarThe First Jewish Revolt, which occurred between AD 66 and 70, was a rebellion by the Jewish population against Roman rule in Judaea. It stemmed from a series of confrontations where small groups of Jews engaged in sporadic resistance against Roman authority, prompting harsh retaliation from the Romans. In the autumn of AD 66, the Jewish factions united in revolt, driving the Romans out of Jerusalem and defeating a punitive force led by Gallus, the imperial legate in Syria, at the pass of Beth-Horon. Subsequently, a revolutionary government was established, extending its control across the region. In response, Vespasian was sent by the Roman emperor Nero to suppress the uprising, with Titus joining him. The Roman forces advanced into Galilee, where the Jewish historian Josephus led the resistance. However, Josephus' army was defeated by Vespasian's forces, leading to his surrender after the fall of the fortress of Jatapata. Jerusalem fell on the 9th of Av in AD 70, resulting in the burning of the Temple and the collapse of the Jewish state. Masada, the fortress, remained under Jewish control until April 73 when it was conquered by the Roman general Flavius Silva.
