After initial development problems, the aircraft met all requirements and was placed in service 1995. In 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. Boeing continued to produce C-17s for export markets as well as an additional 15 for the Air Force. A total of 279 C-17s were produced by 2015. The aircraft has a wingspan of nearly 170 feet and is 55 feet tall at the top of the tail. The maximum takeoff weight is 585,000 lb. (392 tons).
