Description: Historic Photo Find: 5-Star General Omar Nelson Bradley RPPC Postcard Spokane, WA. Historical Background: Omar Nelson Bradley graduated from West Point in June 1915 "the class the Stars fell on". His first appointment as a 2nd Lieutenant was with the 14th Infantry Regiment's 3rd battalion at Fort George Wright, near Spokane, Washington. Arriving in September 1915, it was here that Bradley was introduced to Edwin Forrest Harding who had a profound impact on Bradley’s military and scholarly career. During his first assignment as a 2nd lieutenant, Bradley was able to get a taste of army life, while developing a love of learning and honing in on his leadership skills. During Bradley time at Fort George Wright, he developed his leadership skills through military discipline and training, coaching sports and servicing as a defense counsel for military disciplinary proceedings. It is here that we find this never before published rare RPPC postcard of 2nd LT. Bradley with his basketball team who won the 1915-1916 championship. Interestingly, Bradley didn't like having his photo taken because of a jaw injury that gave him a prominent overbite and a lot of pain throughout most of his life. He rarely ever showed his teeth or smiles during his early years. While Bradley time was short in Fort George Wright, it was, nonetheless, an early and historical time as it was his first military assignment after graduating West Point. Later in 1916, the 14th would be dispatched, along with Bradley, to Arizona during the Mexican Revolution which was experiencing significant cross border violence. What make this RPPC even more interesting is the photographer: Charles A. Libby, Sr. of Spokane, WA. Famed early RPPC Photographer in Washington State who has a PBS documentary on him and his studio. Libby Studios Collection is housed and managed by the MAC Northwest Museum of Art & Culture. On contacting the MAC to see if they had the original or its negative of this photograph and they do not (which adds to it rarity). This is truly rare and historical find and I am happy to have been a part of its discovery.
