Description: Native American Jemez Pueblo Pottery Wedding Bowl Vase~ Signed L.Toya, Jemez N.M. (5 inches tall x 6 inches diameter) This stunning Native American Jemez Wedding Vase was handmade and painted by artist L. Toya in New Mexico. It was all hand coiled and hand worked. It was then hand painted with a two-color design around the entire vase made of dyes of rust and black from natural vegetation and minerals from the reservation and fired in the traditional way. During the traditional marriage ceremony of the Pueblo people, the wedding vase plays a prominent role and represents the spiritual connection that a husband and wife share. One side of the vase represents the bride the other the groom. These vases are usually symmetrical and I have only seen one other one similar in shape to this with the asymmetrical holes further adding to its uniqueness. What an amazing and unusual piece of Native American pottery to add to your collection! This piece is in vintage pre-owned condition with no chips or cracksPlease see all photos (zoom in) as they are an important part of this descriptionThis beautiful Wedding Vase measures 5 inches tall with a diameter of 6 inchesIt is signed on the bottom: "L. The pottery produced there is known for its distinctive earth-tone colors blending stone polished and matte finishes with painted and etched designs. The people of Jemez abandoned the craft of pottery making sometime in the early 18th century and relied instead on purchasing wares from other Pueblos, mostly Zia. Eventually they began to create their own work again during the 1920s and 30s, incorporating Zia's traditional designs and styles. It was not until the late 70s or 80s when Jemez pottery, with the help of noted award winning Jemez Pueblo artists that Jemez pottery began to take on more distinctive designs and qualities that have it very popular among collectors and enthusiasts.
