N172 Old Judge Cabinet Card George Sleepy Townsend With Ball 1888 1/1 G&B Studio

These are the oversized cabinet cards. This one from Gilbert & Bacon Studio. It measures about 4.25" X 6.25" . This is an image of Philadelphia's George Townsend , more commonly known as "Sleepy Townsend." Now, this card itself is scarce in its traditional size. The metropolitan owns a copy of a variation as you can see from the screenshot (no ball.) PSA shows ONE example in its graded population report of Townsend prepared to catch, and SGC shows two total examples of catching variations. Now, it is clear from looking at the 461 variations 461-3 and 461-4 one which has a ball, the other which doesn't, the the hands in the one with a ball are in a different position from the one with no ball, which matches the position here. It is likely this is the no ball variation BUT with the ball prior to editing. This would make this not ONLY a unique, ULTRA-RARE cabinet card, but the ONLY specific version. I make no promises to this, I cite only the research of others (which I can present.) I welcome new information which I can incorporate. This card has been authenticated by MBA and sealed, hence not showing the card outside of plastic. Card is obviously in poor shape, with numerous creases and a surface copyright stamp, but shows NO paper loss and NO writing best I can tell, itself less common on cabinet cards. This is TRULY special for a 19th century collector.
