Description: Individualized Instruction in Mathematics - Activity Cards Authors: John Wagner, William Cole, Robert Scrivens, & Marian Herrick Houghton Mifflin Company Set of eighty (80) different activity cards that cover a broad range of basic mathematical concepts and topics. These cards were a supplement to Modern School Mathematics Course 1 and 2 by Mary P Dolciani and Modern School Mathematics Structure and Use Grades 4-6 by Ernest Duncan . The cards have been written with the needs of mathematics students in Grades 7 and 8 in mind. However, the cards may also prove useful in Grades 4 to 6 for enrichment or for advanced math students. I used these cards to accompany Modern School Mathematics Structure and Use when my boys were in elementary school. Contents: * One set of eighty different activity cards, with tabbed dividers.* One four-page teacher’s guide.* Storage box. The activity cards and teacher’s guide are in excellent condition with no markings. The storage box has normal shelf wear. These activity cards may be adapted to many differing levels of mathematical background and ability, for enrichment, for practice, for review, for reinforcement, or for remedial work in fundamental mathematical concepts. Organization There are 80 different activity cards. The cards are separated into eight sections by tab dividers. The following list shows the sections and quantity of cards: Sets, Numbers, Numerals: 20 cardsAddition of Whole Numbers: 18 cardsSubtraction of Whole Numbers: 20 cardsMultiplication of Whole Numbers: 22 cardsDivision of Whole Numbers: 18 cardsFractional Numbers: 18 cardsDecimals, Ratios, Percents: 24 cardsApplying Number Ideas: 20 cards The Table of Contents on the inside of the box lid lists the titles of the cards in each section. The numbering of the cards in each section is primarily for identification and does not imply a rigid order of difficulty. Generally, however, simpler concepts are presented on cards with lower numbers. How to Use the Cards The following headings appear on each card. 1. Behavioral Objectives The behavioral objectives state in simple terms the mathematical concepts being developed on the card. They help give direction to the student’s work. 2. Pretest The Pretest generally contains five exercises which are representative of those in the Learning Activities. The Pretest should be completed as quickly as possible by the student. Five minutes should be more than sufficient time for most of the Pretest. After the student has completed the Pretest, he may check his answers on the back of the card and decide whether the Learning Activities on the card will be beneficial. 3. Learning Activities “Learning Activities” is the title given to the major subdivision of the card. On some cards one finds only drill and practice exercises in this subdivision. On other cards both explanatory material and exercises appear. Some exercises numbers are preceded by a star. The star indicates that the exercise is somewhat more challenging than the others on the card. 4. Post-test After a student has completed the exercises in the Learning Activities and checked his answers (we suggest that he redo any exercises that he missed), he may take the Post-test. The Post-test generally consists of ten exercises that are similar to those completed in the Learning Activities. A check of the answers on the back of the card will indicate how well a student understands the concept and what kind of further work, if any, is necessary. 5. Answers The answers to the exercises of the Pretest, Learning Exercises, and the Post-test are listed on the back of each card. Usually only the final result is given. However, if the card emphasized a particular method, more detail about the method used might also be shown. On several occasions, the statement “Answers will vary” occurs. We suggest that any student who questions the correctness of his answer check the result with his teacher.
