With a stone I always scratch the blade, with a steel I do not. This is a fine sharpening steel not as rough as the larger kitchen steels. These work very well and are much quicker. Chefs use the Larger version all the time. If you lost your original this is a way to replace it. Most sheaths have room to carry this with out a specific pocket.
