Description: Michel FAULTE copper engraving of Ino and Athamas from Renouard's Metamorphoses of Ovid, 1619 Michael/Michel Faulte engraved 11 of the plates in Nicholas Renouard's celebrated edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses, published in Paris in 1619. The story and many dramatic details in this narrative image are fascinating today, and the profusion of Early Modern painters and engravers illustrating The Metamorphoses indicates that consumers at the time — our ancestors — were similarly enthralled. In Greek mythology, Ino was a princess of Thebes and the wife of King Athamas of Boeotia. She helped raise Dionysos, the god of wine, but the most famous myth associated with her is her descent into madness and the tragic fate of her family. That, her final stage, is the subject of this engraving. The last picture shows what the image in an intact book looked like to readers in the 1600s; I think it's at The Getty. The book is NOT included in this lot. Sheet: 4.7 inches tall x 5.75 inches wide. Trimmed just outside plate mark. French text on reverse. Safely shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer. Thank you for looking. I hope you’ll consider checking out my other listings, and enjoy your day.
