Description: Vintage original menu, LYONS' "POPULAR" CAFE, Piccadilly, London, U.K. , 1910. Early menu from the people-popular tea rooms and "corner houses" established in the 1880s by Montague Gluckstein (tobacconist) who recognized the need for an "in between" type of tea shop, coffee shop, restaurant that didn't fall into the categories of "dive" or elegant and fancy dining available at London's hotels. By 1939 there were 200 of these establishments - just in London. This cafe was opened in Piccadilly, on the earliest of its type, by 1910. Now part of the Oxford English Dictionary, the term "Nippies" was coined to refer to the "quick and efficient" waitresses. Three (3) menu options are listed, with varied pricing, from most expensive to least expensive - all appealing to a popular clientele but not so "ritzy". Most of the Lyons closed in the 1970s but one was revived (by popular demand), in the 1980s, located off the Strand by Trafalgar Square. This menu measures 4 3/4" x 3 3/8". It has light wear at corners; otherwise in remarkably fine condition. Domestic buyer pays $3.50 S&H; International buyer - cost varies depending on country. International Buyers - Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
