This war hammer is expertly replicated from a piece in a private collection from 15th C. Overall 25-1/2", 5" long head with 1.25" side spikes, 2" beaked back spike and 3.5" long top spike. Metal langets protect the handle and help secure the hammer head. American Hickory hardwood handle with steel studs and butt cap.With the increasing sturdiness of plate armor, the sword became less and less effective against a fully armored knight. Hammers, axes, and maces soon became the weapon of choice for hand-to-hand combat of the mounted knight. The war hammer quickly evolved and became one of the premier weapons. Generally, it was lighter and faster than the mace. Often it was made somewhat longer so that the reach could be extended, but shortened as well if need be for close quarters combat.
