Description: Thank you for looking. Please visit my other listings of contemporary and antique Japanese art. Master The 2nd Tetsuen, a.k.a. Chiyoko Hamatsu 浜津千代子 (1932-2007) shingata kokeshi. Tamajiro ink, varnish. Circa the 1970s-1980s. Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. This gorgeous kokeshi is an excellent representation of Chiyoko Hamatsu's unique style - the ability to combine the natural beauty of the wood grain with the complexity of the amber-color varnish and the stylish darkness of the tamajiro ink to create an almost mystical impression on the viewer, with the color changing from dark brown to light-amber. A true piece of art.Tetsuen School This school of shingata (“new traditional”) kokeshi was founded by Master Yashiro Tetsuen 八代鉄園 (1907-2060). He is not officially listed in creative Kokeshi books because his dolls, while a departure from the established traditional schools, are clearly inspired by traditional kokeshi. (Such styles are referred to as "shingata" kokeshi.) The last name "Tetsuen"' was passed on to the next generation of makers. The 2nd generation of the Tetsuen artists was represented by a female artist Chiyoko Hamazu 浜津千代子, who worked under the artistic name The 2nd Tetsuen. She is the sister in law of Yashiro Tetsuen (the 1st generation master and owner of the business) also the wife of Hamazu Heizanuro, the traditional Yajiro Kokeshi artist who apprenieced under Master Niiyama Sanai. Works by Yashiro Tetsuen and Chiyoko Hamazu are highly regarded and sought after by kokeshi collectors. Height: approximately 9.7 inches (24 cm) Head diameter: approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm).
