Description: 1869 H.H. TAYLOR ELGIN NATIONAL KEYWIND COIN SILVER POCKET WATCH, CLEAN ME! 1869 H.H. TAYLOR ELGIN NATIONAL KEYWIND COIN SILVER POCKET WATCH, CLEAN ME! Click images to enlarge Description You are bidding on an absolutely stunning National (Elgin) Watch Company - "H.H. Taylor" grade pocket watch that is 153 years old!! This watch is a HIGHLY DESIRABLE and EXTREMELY RARE large and very heavy 18 size mens Coin Silver open face case that is in amazing condition for its age. This watch is 100% period, right down to its dial and heavy coin silver case! This watch is one of the oldest I have had in my possession. A watch like this should be the cornerstone of any Early American collector because of the age, originality, history and the fact that it is one of the earliest grades produced by National – an EARLY 15 JEWEL grade. What an exciting find! The serial number on the movement is 37xxx, making it a very early H.H. Taylor and placing production at 1869 – this is right in the midst of the Industrial Revolution! The watch has so many amazing features! The movement is a Model 1 "full plate" model and is an 15 Jewel – check out the "Liverpool window" jewels, the size of the cap jewel and the presence of a fully compensated balance! It is a gilded movement with the gilding being in Excellent condition. The balance cock also shows spectacular hand engraving which adds to the beauty of this movement. The "H.H. Taylor" Grade watch was one step under that of their H.Z. Culver grade and was, at the time, the 3rd highest grade model. The case is of the highest quality and is a Coin Silver case in Excellent condition and correct style for the age of the watch. Check out the photos and you will see the great condition of this "drum" style case - considering it’s age, this watch was gently used. This case is just massive and amazing to hold in your hand. The 4 ounce "drum" style case is nearly 59mm in diameter and the entire watch weighs a whopping 185.2 grams!!! It features solid gold offset hinges, which have all caps still intact. The case has no major dents or dings and all lids open to less than 90 degrees, indicating little use. The hinges are all firm and all case lids close with no gaps showing which is fantastic for a case of this age. The case has great offset solid gold hinges and the original glass crystal is intact and in good order. The bow is tight and evidences minimal wear thought the bow guards do require re-secured. The single sunk dial is also in near perfect condition – ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE FOR THE AGE!! The roman numerals are still very clear and in ‘like new’ condition. The dial is correctly signed which was appropriate for the 1869 watches made at Elgin. This watch is key set and key wind. The watch has a good balance, train, and mainspring but is competely gummed up and has not been recently serviced. It has every indication of simply needing a cleaning. The hands set very well and are clean and a deep brilliant blue. There is no possible way you could be disappointed with this watch and it would be the pride of your collection. This old masterpiece has history and good looks!
