Description: Mapping the Grand Traverse Indian Country: The Contributions of Peter Doughertyby Helen Hornbeck Tanner The Rev. Peter Dougherty (1805-1894) was sent out by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in1838. He accurately sketched the Grand Traverse Bay which previously had not been explored. He returned a year later and established a school and mission on Old Mission Point. This book reveals early Indian settlements and intermixing in the 1850s, just as the first white settler communities were being established. It also discusses the effects of the 1836 and 1855 Indian Treaties. Beginning in 1851, Dougherty moved his mission to Omena in Leelanau County. The school of 25 girls and 25 boys opened in 1852 and continued until 1870. The “New Mission” church was completed in 1858. Other Leelanau Indian communities were also established during this period. At age 93, HELEN HORNBECK TANNER created this historical cover map of the 1850swhich traces the early American Indian and white settlement in the Grand Traverseregion. She was a prominent historian of Great Lakes Indians, respected authority onNative Rights, and was senior research fellow at the Newberry Library in Chicago forthirty years. Tanner was project director and editor of the Atlas of Great Lakes ofIndian History published in 1987 by University of Oklahoma Press. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the atlas is considered “the only accuratemapping of Native American Tribes” for this area.
