Description: Manuscript Descriptive List for Samuel H. Pullen – 2nd New York Infantry Offered for your consideration is a manuscript descriptive list regarding a soldier in the 2nd New York Infantry, possibly in relation to his pay, signed at the conclusion by the officer in command of his company. Headlined “Descriptive List of Samuel H Pullen of Co ‘C’ 2nd Regt Infantry N. Y. Vols”, this piece states that “Said Samuel H Pullen was at the time of his enlistment / Age 19 years / Height 5 ft 6¾ in / Complexion Light / Eyes Blue / Hair Light”. It further indicates that Pullen was “Born in Brunswick Rensselaer Co N. Y. and is by occupation a Farmer He was enlisted October 11th 1861 at Troy N. Y. by Lt Col Olmsted for the term of three years”. The final paragraph states that Pullen “Was last paid by Paymaster Fletcher up to April 30th 1862 and has pay due him from that date”. This piece is signed in a different hand by “John Fairchild Lieut. / Com’d’g Co. ‘C’”. The back of the document, which is s larger sheet folded in half, bears a filing notation which reads “S. H. Pullen / Co I 2nd N.Y Vol” (this was probably intended to be a “C”, but was written backwards). No date is associated with the penning of this document, nor is a location listed. Cursory research indicates that Pullen was discharged in late 1862 to enlist in the United States Army, and it is possible that this list was compiled at that time to facilitate that change of affiliation. An unusual document that would frame nicely beside portraits of the individuals (if they exist) or a view of the regimental camp (also, if it exists). Samuel H. Pullen was 18 years old when he enlisted on April 22, 1861 at Troy, New York. He was mustered in as a private in Company C on May 14, 1861 to serve for two years, though he was discharged for disability on July 7, 1861. He re-enlisted on October 11, 1861 to serve for three years, though he was discharged on December 26, 1862 to enlist in the United States Army. John Fairchild was 24 years of age when he enlisted on April 23, 1861 at Troy, New York. He was mustered in as a sergeant in Company I on May 14, 1861 to serve for two years. He was promoted second lieutenant on April 22, 1862 and mustered out with his company on May 26, 1863, at Troy, New York. Cursory research indicates that the 2nd New York Infantry Regiment, also known as the “Troy Regiment”, was organized in Troy, New York and was mustered into Federal service on May 14, 1861 for two years. They were mustered out of service on May 26, 1863 having lost 1 officer and 25 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 22 enlisted men dead from disease. They participated in the battles of Big Bethel, Oak Grove, White Oak Swamp, Bristoe Station, Groveton, and Chancellorsville, and were present at several others. The presently offered document exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of less than ideal storage. Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper an off-white to beige hue. This toning is somewhat darker at the edges and along the numerous folds, as well as on one significant section of the back. Additionally, this toning is mixed with soiling, creating several dark areas throughout the piece (the back is significantly worse than the front). As noted earlier, numerous folds are present, several of which have affected the overall integrity of the stock (this is especially true at the edges, where a few small tears can be found). The contrast is average, with all of the text being visible (some, however, is difficult to read due to poor penmanship). Very minor ink corrosion is noted for accuracy, as no paper has been lost or seriously damaged at this time. Measuring approximately 5¼ x 8⅜ when folded and 8⅜ x 10⅜ when laid flat, this piece would make an interesting addition to any Civil War document collection (see our other 2nd New York Infantry documents).
