Norris always does a good job with descriptions, and the New York of the 40's comes alive, right down to the awful poetry being written by self-important but untalented would-be bohemians. If you enjoy the New York scenes, you might also like an entirely different Norris novel, "The Beloved Woman". Stanford graduates will also enjoy the vivid scenes of life as a Stanford senior that open the book.
