The double matted board is ecru silk over gold. The glazed frame measures 26" in width, 20 1/2" in height and 1” in depth. The matted image measures 17 1/2" in width and 12" in height. The color etching is one of a series of seven New York City scenes by Luigi Kasimir and Tanna Kasimir-Hoernes placed in the McNeil residence by the noted interior designer Norman Foster. Alois Heinrich (Luigi) Kasimir, (1881-1962) Luigi Kasimir was born in Ptuj, Austria (today Slovenia) then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He may have inherited his talent from his ancestors; his grandfather was a painter and a poet, and his father, an officer in the Habsburg army, who later became a professional painter. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under Willhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the color etching, and also to his future wife, the artist Tanna Hoernes. Kasimir was among the early practitioners of the multi-plate color etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-colored with the color being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch—usually in pastel. He then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the color to the plate - all done by hand. Luigi Kasimir painted in oils and pastels and is famous for his color etchings. One of his favorite genres was the landscape. He demonstrated a predisposition for monuments, street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York skyscrapers to natural wonders like California’s Yosemite Valley. Kasimir’s wife, Tanna and their son Robert worked in a similar style. Luigi Kasimir died in 1962 in Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna, Austria Johanna (Tanna) Kasimir-Hoernes, (1887-1972) Painter, etcher, and graphic designer Johanna (Tanna) Hoernes was born in Graz, Austria. She studied at the School for Women and Girls with Ludwig Michalek and at the Vienna Academy of Art with Wilhelm Unger, where she met her future husband, Luigi Kasimir. They were married in 1911 and worked collaboratively to develop the revolutionary technique of color etching. Each produced a substantial body of work, consisting largely of views based on their worldwide travels. Her work is highly prized for its exacting detail and realistic depiction of both the notable architectural subjects and natural landscapes that she and her husband observed in their travels. She died in Vienna. Norman Foster, American (1921-2009) In 1952, Norman Foster opened design studios in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas. His work took him throughout the U.S. and Europe. His design projects were published 35 times in Vogue, Architectural Digest, House and Garden - including theParis edition of the HallMark house 1962, House Beautiful - including the Pace Setter House 1961, Town and Country, Texas Monthly, and Interior Design. In 1982 House Beautiful listed him as one of 12 top interior designers internationally. In 1975 Norman closed his business and moved to the Carmel Highlands to devote full time to his painting and sculpture. Professional affiliations included American Society of Interior Designers, and he was an Honorary Member of Practicing Designers, London.
