Description: love and war Stories of romance from World War II The phone rang while I was interviewing Lou Putnoky, a Coast Guard veteran who served on the USS Bayfield. The caller was a shipmate who wanted to discuss the Bayfield's upcoming reunion. Lou's wife, Olga, was sitting at the table while Lou went into the next room to take the call. I asked Olga, "How did you and Lou meet?" "Lou and I lived in Carteret (New Jersey), and we belonged to the same church," she said. "I was, I think, five years old and he was six. I was in the church play, and his mother and he were sitting in the first row. He said, 'See that dark-haired girl? When she grows up I'm gonna marry her.' We went to different schools ... we started to date, nothing serious until he got home from the service." "And you have how many children?" I asked. "We have two children," Olga said. "We have Bruce, he's 44 (this was in 1994), and Diane, who's 40. Our son was born in 1950. We'll be married 48 years in May. We just had four 50th anniversaries of our close friends. And our children were invited to all of them, they just couldn't get over it. Lou's parents were married over 70 years. "We do not live for just today. I think that's the thing of it. Today's youngsters live for today. I was at a checkout line of a supermarket a couple of years ago. There were two very pretty young girls, and one said to the checkout girl, 'I hear you're getting married. What made you decide?' "She said, 'Well, you know, if it doesn't work out, I'll get rid of him.' I was just shocked. I didn't say a word. I just listened, but what fools. Don't get married if you have that kind of attitude. But we've just been very lucky in our relationship." I've always loved that story. I began interviewing veterans of my father's tank battalion at a reunion in 1987 and I was so moved by the stories I heard that I returned year after year and interviewed more of them. And then one day Helen Grottola, the wife of Joe Grottola, who was a truck driver in the battalion, grabbed me by the arm and asked me when I was going to start interviewing the wives? "How about now?" I said. This double audio CD, about two hours in length, is full of stories taken from different interviews in which the subject of romance came up.Other Oral History Audiobooks by Aaron Elson: Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites
