About Kennedy half dollars: The Day America Lost its InnocenceKennedy coins are of grief-struck beginnings. In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy, a charismatic and popular president from Massachusetts, the youngest President the country had ever elected, was in a motorcade touring Dallas. He and the First Lady were in the back seat of an open-air convertible when President Kennedy was shot by an assassin from an upper window of an adjacent building. President Kennedy died that day in what then was an unimaginable act of political violence. A bystander caught the horrific scene with his movie camera focused squarely on the the President and First Lady. The country was deeply shaken and life crashed to a halt across much of the country. It has come to be called 'The day America lost its innocence.'Just 5 months afterward, the Kennedy half dollar was placed into circulation. The first day banks distributed them, there were widespread reports that people lined up for blocks before the bank doors opened. By the end of that day, widespread reports were that all banks ran out of the new half dollars by noon.
