Description: A very rare early state etching of a panoramic landscape by American etcher Walter Tittle (1883-1966). The print most likely depicts a landscape of the Danbury Hills in Connecticut where Tittle made his home. This is an early pre-publication proof and is unfinished, it is annotated in the lower margin: "8th trial 2nd state", it is also inscribed for presentation and dated to October of 1938 as well as being signed twice by Tittle. Good sized, the plate measures 8 5/8 x 14 7/8 inches, sheet size is 10 1/8 x 17 1/2 inches. This etching is a very richly worked impression printed on cream colored wove paper. Aside from a framer's notation for the mat reveal just below the signature, the print is in excellent condition and ready for framing. Walter Ernest Tittle (1883-1966) was a well regarded American painter and etcher known for portraits, landscapes and New York City scenes.
