Description: Winner receives a signed and dated oil painting by well listed American/Romanian artist Saul Steinberg (1914-1999). The piece depicts a portrait of a man and is signed and dated in the lower right corner, seen magnified in picture 6. The piece comes with impeccable and absolute provenance as it was gifted by the artist to Jean Stein, whose collection was sold at Sotheby's. The painting is in excellent original condition with no damage to the board or in-painting. It appears the board may have been trimmed as there is some illegible writing in the bottom left corner that is cut off, seen magnified in picture 5. Also it appears the painting was dated below the signature and that has been partially cut off as well, although it appears to read 1955, seen magnified in picture 6. The frame is in excellent condition with no cracks, losses, or repairs, but does have age related wear. The painting is an absolute gem and ready for hanging as-is. The frame measures roughly 22.25" x 25.5", with the image itself measuring roughly 18" x 15". Below is some information about the artist, whose auction records include sales up to $87,700. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing. Famed worldwide for giving graphic definition to the postwar age, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Steinberg crafted a rich and ever-evolving idiom that found full expression through these parallel yet integrated careers. Such many-leveled art, however, resists conventional critical categories. “I don’t quite belong to the art, cartoon or magazine world, so the art world doesn’t quite know where to place me,” he said. He was a modernist without portfolio, constantly crossing boundaries into uncharted visual territory. In subject matter and styles, he made no distinction between high and low art, which he freely conflated in an oeuvre that is stylistically diverse yet consistent in depth and visual imagination.
